During my first few lessons as a media studies student i have covered a number of different topics in class. For instance Media terms, Colour theory, Semiotics, Representation, and social, cultural and political context. To give an understanding of each topic i will speak about them all in more depth.

Some media terms i have learnt so far are as follows...

Colour theory

Colour theory is a theory which suggests that different colours used and seen in media may make the audience or a person feel a certain way and can change their mental state and attitude. The diagram below shows some of the colours and connotations they may have along with them.

Semiotics

Semiotics are the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation. This means the use of signs and symbols in media. Semiotics are used all the time in everyday media life and some of the symbols used are so well known that they are almost a universal language and can be used to create meaning or imply or suggest something to the audience.

Representation

Representation in media is all about how people are made to look and how people may be separated and stereotyped by their race, culture, religion, gender and any other differences i may of missed out. For instance teenagers in the UK may be shown as violent, uneasy, and dangerous but in general most teenagers may not be like that at all.

As well as learning individually about all of these areas of media i have also learnt how to deconstruct and anotate a magazine. I have learnt key words and techniques which the creator may have used to create meaning or target a certain audience
