During my first few lessons as a media studies student i have covered a number of different topics in class. For instance Media terms, Colour theory, Semiotics, Representation, and social, cultural and political context. To give an understanding of each topic i will speak about them all in more depth.

Some media terms i have learnt so far are as follows...

Colour theory

Colour theory is a theory which suggests that different colours used and seen in media may make the audience or a person feel a certain way and can change their mental state and attitude. The diagram below shows some of the colours and connotations they may have along with them.

Semiotics

Semiotics are the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation. This means the use of signs and symbols in media. Semiotics are used all the time in everyday media life and some of the symbols used are so well known that they are almost a universal language and can be used to create meaning or imply or suggest something to the audience.

Representation

Representation in media is all about how people are made to look and how people may be separated and stereotyped by their race, culture, religion, gender and any other differences i may of missed out. For instance teenagers in the UK may be shown as violent, uneasy, and dangerous but in general most teenagers may not be like that at all.

As well as learning individually about all of these areas of media i have also learnt how to deconstruct and anotate a magazine. I have learnt key words and techniques which the creator may have used to create meaning or target a certain audience

In recent media studies lessons we have been learning about what the male gaze means and how it may affect the way in which the audience understands media.

In feminist philosophy "the male gaze" is the act of depicting the world and women in the visual arts and in literature from a masculine and heterosexual point of view, which present women as objects of male pleasure, and as a result woman look at themselves through the eyes of men in the media.

The theory of "the Male Gaze" was created by Laura Mulvey. Laura is a British feminist film theorist. She was educated at St Hilda's College, Oxford. She is currently professor of film and media.

The male gaze can sometime be hard to find in media but it is shown when females are represented only by how they seem to the hero or the male in the movie or media type.
It is often hidden but most females are only shown as they may be seen by a male for example for their sexuality. This can be seen in the picture of a set of a James bond film.

My names Aj and this is my first ever post on blog spot. Im a media studies student at NMBEC and over the next two years i will be studying 9 different types of media. These 9 types of media are ....
Magazine
Radio
Music video
Film
Video game
Newspaper
Online
Advertising
Television

Within these nine forms of media i will study different areas of media theoretical framework. There are specifically 5 areas which are ..

Media language:
what is meant by the text or images used by the writer or creator.

Media industries:
The the way the media may be promoted or distributed but also its platform in the media.

Media representation:
This looks at the variety of  different types of people and how they are represented and seen stereotypically  by the the media. For instance by age religion or gender.

Media contexts:
This area looks at the background to the media and takes into consideration what was going on at the time this media was created.

Media audiences
This looks at how the media has specific target audiences and how the audience themselves can become prosumers and benefit of the media. The audience can use the media given to them and recreate or change it in a way which could be seen as another form of media
